History of Sprint races in Slovenia

Slovenian orienteering federation already in first year after WOC 2001 included sprint format in the national calendar. Now it is 5th season with Sprint format as a National championship. Last year we got approval from Olympic committee that is also possible make categorization for best sportsmen in Sprint format. All previous National championship sprint races were organized in forest or in forested area. Look at the maps. This year will be first year that Nation sprint championship will be organized in fully urban area.

Sprint race were organized also at some other occasions (Celebration race Gorizia/Novo Gorica – when Slovenia enter the EU 2004, 2005, Alpe-Adria Park cup (SLO-CRO) and at regional level leagues.  Races: city o-event in Koper 1997, 2003, sprint race in Škofja Loka 2003, Idrija 2004, 2005, Cerkno, Kostanjevica 2001, Tivoli 2001.

Slovenian national sprint championships

Sprint race in PIRAN will be the first sprint race in Slovenia which will count also for WRE rank (World ranking event). World ranking scheme is developed by the IOF for the purpose of ranking all athletes. It is also used for start list for the Qualification race at the World championships.

Piran race will try to take into consideration as much advises from LEIBNITZ convention as possible which is also our aim to present orienteering to people and media. Sprint race has also a goal to secure financial budget with co-organizers from Italy and Croatia to bring PWT series back in Slovenia in 2007 or 2008.
